Ode to the Jazz – Hans van de Bovenkamp

Large Version

The main post is again a compilation, this time of three close up pictures, of three sculptures of Hans van de Bovenkamp.
In the workshop you can admire two of them in full size.

Workshop I: Menhir Tower
Workshop II: Spire

The info-board with the sculptures tells “Bovenkamp improvises like a Jazz Musician. His method is reflecting in the fragmentary, casual lines of which his sculptures are composed of.”

The artworks are places on the Gustav Mahlerplein near the railway and metro-station Amsterdam-Zuid.
The large-scale sculptures accord beautifully with the surrounding of modern architecture

The sculptures are made of stainless steel.
I choose for the compilation of three close-up pictures as main post for I was fascinated by the effect of the surface treatment of the stainless steel.
Hans Van de Bovenkamp (born 1938) is a Dutch-born American sculptor.
Van de Bovenkamp was born in Garderen, Holland in 1938 and immigrated to the United States in 1958.
He is best known for his large scale abstract work in bronze, stainless steel, painted steel, and aluminium.
Van de Bovenkamp's works are often influenced by myth, symbol, and nature. He is a member of the International Sculpture Center, the New York Sculptors Guild, and the Royal Society of British Sculptors. (source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hans_Van_de_Bovenkamp

Hello Rob,
The collage nicely captures the spirit and abstract nature of the individual artworks. I like the well rendered silvery tones and the detailing.

Bonjour, cher ami Rob,

Hello Rob and thanks for your critique on mine.
All three collage pic.s and the two WS's as complementaries, wonderfully presented.
The close-up's light and shadows playing superbly on the outcome.
Wish you a nice weekend,

Dag Rob

Jazz op het Gustav Mahlerplein...dat lijkt me iets voor Misha Mengelberg zaliger!

Mooie tribute.

Ciao Rob, beautiful collage, like anche abstract artwork, fine details and excellent clarity, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio

Hello Rob,

I do think metal is a superb material for sculpture, it changes and seems to move with the light. I can imagine the differences in these sculptures at different times of the year and in different lights. Yes, I can see it linking with the flow of music (jazz).

I remember taking a photograph of a horse, sculptured in metal, when I was in France and I was wowed by it.

Have a lovely w/e,
Bev :-)

Hello Rob,
There is certainly a lot of rhythm in these works, but I don't quite understand how patterns like these are improvised in that kind of material. You can't work like Jackson Pollock when you are handling stainless steel. All these close-ups are fascinating but the workshops are necessary to understand what we are looking at. I am just as attracted by the large shapes.
Kind regards,

Hallo Rob,

Hi Rob
A good collective pieces, it must have taken a while to decide on the final arrangement. Great eye for detail, love the silvery tones in this and each image is fine
on their own making an excellent image overall. Nice effort, Congrats.

Hello Rob, Original collage of the details of the sculpture. Interesting effects of the reflections, but I do not quite understand how they are produced. Attractive big sculptures in the open space of the city (in Workshopws). creative composition.

Kind regrad s MAlgo

Hello Rob,

what a fascinating play of light and reflections, each of it giving a proof how the artist handled tool and metal.

If you are looking for an exposition with a similar theme and can spare some time: come here and see the works of Henry Moore at Arp Museum, Rolandseck! I have been to the pre-pre-preview, which was mesmerizing, and I assume you will have much occasion to capture visitors as well as sculptures. For information see www.arpmuseum.org.

Regards from Rhineland

Hello Rob,

Good sharpness and excellent metallic silvery tones in this superb triptych of images. I like the minimalist color and faint pastel tones of cyan yellow red and green here and there. An informative accompanying note. Tfs!

Hello Rob,
This is a nice collage of three abstract bookmarks. I like abstract work, so I like this one, too.

this marks in the steel created by the artist are very interesting and I liked your idea to put three of them side by side.
