"Carrelets" on the west coast of the Island Île Madame, in the Atlantic Ocean.

Carrelet and Fort Boyard

The Island Île Madame is the smallest island, 75 hectares and 1000 m out of 600 m, of the islands of the Charentaise coast after the Île d'Oléron, the Île de Ré, the Île d'Aix, on southern bank of the estuary of Charente.
One reaches it low tide, from Port-des-Barques, by a made natural passage of sand and rollers, the “passe aux bœufs”.
It is a place favourable with the fishing of leisure. Many "carrelets" there are found.

A "carrelet" is a square thread, suspended at the end of a pole, descended and after some time re-installed quickly imprisoning the fish which were with the top of him, thanks to a winch placed on on a wood footbridge on pile, connected to the coast by a pontoon.
These footbridges divided on all the littoral of charente-Maritime and of the estuary of the Gironde and a little into the Vendée, belong to the coastal inheritance.

One sees the Fort Boyard, at sea between the island of Aix and the island of Oléron, place of a very known television game.
Built of 1801 to 1857 to protect the roads and the Maritime Arsenal from Rochefort against the English navy.
With 68 meters length on 31 meters broad, its surface is of 2700 m ². Its enclosure reaches 20 meters height.

Port-des-Barques is French commune, located in the department of the Charente-Maritime of the Poitou-Charentes area, populated of 1534 Portbarquais, distributed on 6 km², that is to say 251 hab./km².

The Island Madam would hold her name of Anne de Rohan, mistress of Louis XIV, or of another Anne de Rohan, XXIIe abbess of Saintes from 1484 to 1523.

Hello Joël,
I am always fascinated by these carrelets that seem particular to the Charentais coast and along the Gironde Estuary. I like the point of view here across the mud flats with the fort in the distance. Also, the soft light and colours. Very good work.

Hello Joel! Very interesting place. Wonderful lightness. Good composition. Mysterious effect. Great effect. Good luck!

ciao Joel ,
ben fatto

Hi Joel.
I have seen these fishing nets from a long way away, but never close-up like this.
The tide range here must be huge, judging by the height of the platform.
Wonderful image beautifully photographed, lovely composition and POV.
Informative note, TFS.

very good shot. I like the soft colors and the good exposure overall. You found an interesitng element and placed it well in the frame. Well done!
PS: translator is not working property :(

Salut Joël,
a good detail capture of the carrelet in "action". The wide background nothing works fine for the good foreground sharpness and clarity with the good textures. My personal favourite is here the one with the row of carrelets. because of its impression of depth.

Hi Joel,
Indeed the Island Île Madame is teensy with 75 hectares. Now I learned something new - "carrelet". This is well composed and exposed with effective color management. Best regards, Danilo

Salut Joel,

Hi Joel!
This is really unusual, at least for me! I like this composition. Seems there isn't much water now for fishing but we can see the nets and the men at the top. Well captured!

Bonjour Joel,
What a lovely and unique view. I';ve never seen this method of fishing. I expect it has been around for awhile. Lighting, detail and framing are just right; leaving plenty of space for the net to work.

Salut Joel,

aan interestin shot here Joel.
very good pov, nice composition and finedetails and balance, good photojob, have a nice evening.
gr. jaap

Hola Joel:
