Ramparts of the fortress of Brouage, watch towers

Brouage is founded in 1555 like outer harbour of the village of Hiers. The economy of the city is then based on salt. The city is then located at edge of the sea, in the gulf of Saintonge.
In 1576, at the time of the sixth war of religion, the duke of Own way takes the city in order to supplement the surrounding of the Protestant place of the Small rock.
In 1586, Rochelais make unusable the port of Brouage.
The ocean is withdrawn gradually far from the city, and the bay is clogged. The rise of Rochefort makes forget the city as of the XVIIIe century.
With Revolution, the city is used as center of detention where several are piled up hundreds of suspects during 1793, then off-set priests come from let us bridge of Rochefort since 1794.

Jean-Armand of the PLESSIS, Cardinal of RICHELIEU was the governor in end 16th century.

Marie MANCINI, niece of the Cardinal of Mazarin, dépitée to be able to marry Louis XIV for reason of State exiled a few times with Brouage.

Samuel of CHAMPLAIN, founder of Quebec was born in Brouage.

Many commemorative plates are sealed on the walls of Brouage of which this one close to the decorated royal door of the weapons of France and Navarre:
"Born in Brouage towards 1570, cartographer and colonizer of world fame, Champlain departed from Honfleur in March 1603 , at the time of the first of a score of crossings between France and Canada. Five years after having weighed the anchor, it melted Quebec thus throwing the bases of the French empire in North America. Intrepid explorer, it traversed the interior of the continent and penetrated to the heart of the territory become now Ontario. The accounts of its voyages provide the first description of an area which was, two centuries during, principal trade route towards the Canadian west. Builder, administrator and defender of the colony, his untameable energy deserved to him the title of "Father of new France". It died on December 25, 1635 in Quebec where it was buried."

Bonjour,

Laurent

Hello Joel,
A good composition of this watch tower on the wall overlooking the marshes. I like how the eye is taken from the tower in the foreground to the next one along the wall and thence into the far distance. Very good natural tones and clarity.

Hi Joel,

Excellent shot, very good strong colors and contrasts.Excellent sharp composition,
Georg

Salut Joël,
belle photo et contexte historique très intéressant. De quoi éveiller la curiosité...
Marc

This is a very well composed image with the placement of the watch tower in just the right place on the left to allow for easy reading of the scene. Our eye hops to the further tower and then to the landscape beyond. Well done
Kath

Salut Joel
Ta photo me fait penser au Désert des tartares. Une tour de garde isolée devant cette plaine immense sous ce ciel superbe. Il y a un sentiment d'attente dans cette photo bien construite.
Un joli coup d'oeil et une bonne note.
Beau travail, amicalement
Hervé

Bonjour Joël,

Hallo Joel!
An interesting picture and note as well - in the sense of TrekEarth. Hard to believe that here a harbour has been centuries ago ... really very interesting! I like the wideness shown in this picture.
Greetings from Germany - and have a nice weekend!
Frank

Excelentes detalles y color natural.
Buen domingo.
Cordialmente

Salut Joël,
green and grey as one of my favourite colour combinations here as often wall and nature, but new as this watch tower on the walls. Good POV for depth and also a wide view, added by some interesting historical facts.

Joel, this is awesome, where do I sign up for the tour that takes me here... seriously though it looks to be something to try and see if I ever get back to the hexagon. Great color and detail as always, and a nice note. Well seen and captured.

Hi Joel!
Somehow I was loosing this one. I lke it, especially the pov showing this little tower in the foreground and then the other one so far away. The wide fields, the stormy sky. Good composition!
