The Basilica of Saint-Sernin (Occitan: Basilica de Sant Sarnin) is a church in Toulouse, France, the former abbey church of the Abbey of Saint-Sernin or St Saturnin.

Apart from the church, none of the abbey buildings remain. The current church is located on the site of a previous basilica of the 4th century which contained the body of Saint Saturnin or Sernin, the first bishop of Toulouse in c. 250.

Constructed in the Romanesque style between about 1080 and 1120, with construction continuing thereafter, Saint-Sernin is the largest remaining Romanesque building in Europe, if not the world. The church is particularly noted for the quality and quantity of its Romanesque sculpture.

Despite being called a basilica, Saint-Sernin's deviates from the basilica plan of early Christian architecture in several ways. It is much larger compared to earlier churches. It is also constructed mostly of brick. The building is in the form of a crucifix. The ceilings are vaulted, unlike many of the earlier churches. Saint-Sernin's contains radiating chapels which were used to display important relics. Another deviation from the earlier Christian churches is the addition of an ambulatory, a walkway that goes around the nave and side aisles to allow for viewing of the radiating chapels (which could be done while mass was being held without interrupting the ceremony). For these and other reasons, Saint-Sernin's is often said to follow the "pilgrimage plan" instead of the traditional basilica plan.

In 1998 the basilica was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites under the description: World Heritage Sites of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela in France.

Salut Stephen,

That's quite an impressive bg spire. It looks like a hybrid of the leaning tower of Pisa and a regular Gothic spire. Good sharpness and nice warm cold colour contrasts. Tfs!

Hi Stephen,

The presence of the people is animating the scene. The point of view is showing the details of the Saint-Sernin basilica. The light is enhancing the colours. Have a nice day.

Bonjour Stephen,

Très jolie construction d'image. Le point de vue est excellent avec le bel arbre sur la droite qui balance bien le cadrage. On voit une grande partie de la basilique et c'est tant mieux.

Amicalement

Hello Stephen,
I really like the soft, gentle colours here, the basilica looks impressive, especially its tower, which you placed very well in the centre. The composition is very well-balanced with a good inclusion of the green trees at right. The group of people brings some life to the picture.
Lars

Hi Stephen
The facade is the highlight of this basilica with the tower serves as a firm focus point and all bathed in lovely warm light. Excellent detail, nice perspective and full marks for colour rendition matched by human presence. Well done shot, Congrats.
Best wishes

A contrast is one value I most appreciate in any picture, Stephen, and especially when light and shadows contrast is evident and balanced.
Noticed that, we get to see a view to the length of the main building and the beautiful tower on the far side, with people gathered in the foreground. All elements combined culmiante wonderfully on the picture, bravo.
Wish you a nice weekend,
Ike

Hello Stephen,
It's a very attractive view of this famous and beautiful church, with the fantastic tower as the main focal-point. You have captured it from a good angle where we get a fine view of a large part of the church, and where the trees offer a nice contrast to the brown brick and a group of people happened to enliven the view. The fairly strong contrasts between sunny and shady areas are well handled in a very good exposure.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hi Stephen,
quite an interesting architecture with the main point of interest being the tower of course. It is quite an extraordinary tower.
Nice presentation framed with the trees on the other side. The architecture contributes the nice diagonal lines.
Very attractive geometrically composition,
M
