One in a series of pictures from the beautiful Southern French city of Aix-en-Provence.

Aix-en-Provence is a city and commune in the south of France, some 30 kilometres (19 miles) north of Marseille. It is in the region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, in the département of Bouches-du-Rhône, of which it is a subprefecture. The population is approximately 143,000.; its inhabitants are called Aixois or, less commonly, Aquisextains.

Aix (Aquae Sextiae) was founded in 123 BC by the Roman consul Sextius Calvinus, who gave his name to its springs, following the destruction of the nearby Gallic oppidum at Entremont. In 102 BC it was the scene of the Battle of Aquae Sextiae when the Romans under Gaius Marius defeated the Cimbri and Teutones, resulting in mass suicide among the captured women; a story which passed into Roman legends of Germanic heroism.

In the 4th century AD it became the metropolis of Narbonensis Secunda. It was occupied by the Visigoths in 477. In the succeeding century, the town was repeatedly plundered by the Franks and Lombards, and was occupied by the Saracens in 731 and by Charles Martel in 737. During the Middle Ages it was made the capital of Provence The city reached its zenith during the period after the 12th century, when, under the houses of Barcelona/Aragon and Anjou, it became an artistic centre and seat of learning. It still has a major university and a large student population.

Aix passed to the crown of France with the rest of Provence in 1487, and in 1501 Louis XII established there the parliament of Provence, which existed until 1789 when it was abolished under the French Revolution. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the town was the seat of the Intendance of Provence.

Hi Stephen
I think we're looking at a Caryatid right? The most beautiful caryatids i've ever seen were in Warsaw Poland.
Caryatids are sculptures which have the purpose of holding up a building for support, like a beam or pole...but obviously with MUCH more class and elegance. Not sure why there aren't more Caryatids, but i love this. its a rare sight
cheers
craig

Hi Stephen,

The entrance is impressive. The point of view is showing the details of the doors, of the statues and of the balcony. It is clear and sharp. Have a nice day.

Pierre

Bonjour Stephen,

Je me dis que tant qu'à faire une entrée, aussi bien la faire spectaculaire et ici c'est bien le cas pour ce tribunal du commerce. Très belle symétrie d'ensemble.

Amicalement

Serge

Hello Stephen,
Excellent close-up photo of this beautiful entrance. The large wooden door offers some great details and so do the two men on either side carrying the balcony. I really like the symmetry. The colours are very well-saturated in this bright sidelight.
