Espelette (Basque: Ezpeleta, Occitan: Espeleta) is a commune in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department in south-western France. It lies in the traditional Basque province of Labourd.

The town is attractive with traditional Labourd houses and a castle. The protected sixteenth century church, Saint-Etienne, has a Baroque altarpiece and its graveyard has many traditional Basque discoidal tombstones. There is also the grave of local woman Agnès Souret the first woman ever chosen as Miss France in 1920. She died in Argentina aged 26 in 1928 and her body was repatriated to Espelette by her mother who sold most of her possessions to provide a resting place for her daughter.

Espelette is known for its dried red peppers, used whole or ground to a hot powder, used in the production of Bayonne ham. The peppers are designated as Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée and are hung to dry outside many of the houses and shops in the village during the summer as can be seen on the facade of the hotel.

Hello Stephen

you have all the Basque colors on your shot: red, white and green.
Good use of the wide angle to let us discover this famous village

Bonjour, cher Stephen,
Connaissant mal cette région, j'apprécie grandement de voir des prises de vue mettant en vedette des maisons emplies de charme.
Une prise de vue pleine de vie.

Hello Stephen

I like the sweeping fg curves leading the eye towards the back and adding perspective, A fine angled pov on the ivy covered red and white building with a pleasant diffused light and good sharpness. Tfs!

Hello Stephen,
I would not have understood the decorations on the façade to be peppers unless I had read the note and enlarged the photo. Since this looks like a pedestrian street these peppers may perhaps not be poisoned by toxic fumes, otherwise I would prefer my peppers to dry in a cleaner place ;-). But they certainly make the walls look nicer, even though they are already nice with all those red details. It's a remarkably bright view on a very grey and dull day.
Kind regards,

Hello Stephen,

I read your notes with interest. There are lots of substances protected by Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée nowadays which I think is a step forwards in authenticity.
This is a beautiful scene, nicely approached by the curved, cobbled street.
My immediate thought was - 'Stephen has captured a particularly effective red scene, here', but then I read Claude's critique making reference to the colours and, maybe, there is much more than accidental use of the colours.
I'm really tempted to enter this scene, if only, it looks so welcoming.

Have a great w/e,
Bev :-)

Dobar dan.
Lep pogled, interesantan i dobar tekst ...
Lepo pokazano mesto i arhitektura, dobra perspektiva i kontrast, lepe boje, lepo uhvacen trenutak.
Lepo mesto sa cvecem i fasade sa zelenilom, lepi prozori.
Zelim vam lep dan, sve najbolje za vikend, srecno.

Good day.
Nice view, interesting and good text ...
Beautifully displayed place and architecture, good perspective and contrast, beautiful colors, beautifully captured moment.
Nice place with flowers and facades with greenery, nice windows.
I wish you a nice day, all the best for a weekend, happy.

Hi Stephen,

The curve of the street is creating depth. The point of view is showing the details of the buildings. I like the repeating shutters. The cloudy sky is giving a good contrast to the colors. Have a nice day.

The climber-plants grab most attention when looking at this photo, Stephen. Green gives good added color to the mostly red and white facades.
Taken well from a turn in the paved street, no cars as an advantage for visitors (and photographers), and as well for local's.
Have a nice weekend,

Bonjour Stephen

Ville mondialement connue pour son piment. On le voit partout sur les murs de ces maisons. La rue est belle avec cette petite courbe qui mène au loin.

Hello Stephen,
Interesting view of this part of Espelette.
Perfect captured and nice colors.
Very nice work.

Ciao Stephen
ecco un altro luogo di cui non conoscevo l'esistenza, con le sue case colorate e i peperoncini alle finestre.
Purtroppo il cielo non era dei migliori, ma possiamo godere di una bella vista con queste splendide facciate.
Buona domenica

A very nice view of the square and surrounding architecture, red (ofthe pepper) seems to be the favorite color of this town, nice pepper "decorations" on the facade :)

Hello Stephen
Charmante façades en rouge et blanc, garnie de lierres pour certaines, tout bon POV, les couleurs sont belles sous le ciel gris
beau dimanche

Hi Stephen
window shutters seem to be a major theme for you right now hahah. but why not right? they're great subjects.

I guess thats why there's so much red here, bc of the peppers. looks fun to photograph, and the green vines are a splendid addition. nice shot cheers

It's a beautiful street view. The canopy over the hotel's restaurant is an eye catcher.
