wings, cross, of the windmill of Saint-Pierre-de-la-Fage

Windmill renovated in 2006, in Saint-Pierre-de-la-Fage sur le CAUSSE DU LARZAC.

The windmills convert the kinetic energy of the wind into mechanical energy. It were used to actuate grinding stones, pumps, saws, etc...
The wings of the mill are supported by a tower, whose roof carrying the axis of the mill is directional in the case of the mill-turn.
If the whole tower is directional, one speaks then about mill on pivot or with candlestick. A typical mill of Anjou, compromised between the precedents, is called mill cavier.
The orientation of the mill is done by pushing the tiller or tail of the mill.
The wings are generally in wood some and covered with canvas. The rotational movement of the horizontal axis of the mill is transmitted to a vertical axis by a whole of gears, the wheel, often manufactured out of wood of various gasolines chosen for their resistance.

Action.

The windmill appeared in the East, Egypt and Iran. First mention of windmill in France, date of 1170, in a charter of the town of Arles. The Netherlands are probably the country which counted the greatest number of windmills.
The windmills were used incidentally as semaphores. Ansi, during the wars of the Vendée, the wings of the windmills of Mont des Alouettes indicated to Vendean the positions and movements of the republican troops.

_The "CAUSSE du LARZAC" is vastest and southernmost of "GRANDS CAUSSES", large causses. Its 1000 km ² of plateau rise from 600 to 900 meters. It is limited to the North-East by Dourbie river which separates it from "Causse Noir", in the North-West the Tarn river separates it from the plateau of Lévézou, in the west it stops with the depression of Roquefort. Its surface is strewn with famous sites with the military orders, Knights of the Order of the Temple and Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem.

_The "GRANDS CAUSSES", in the south of the Massif Central, are delimited in north by the plateau of "Aubrac", in the east by the Cévennes, the south by the plain of the "lodévois", in the west by the plateau of "Lévézou". These are plateaus limestones whose altitude varies from 700 to 1250 meters of altitude, and of surface going up to 1000 km².
The "Grands Causses" are formed by important "Causses of Larzac" (1000 km²), of "Sauveterre" (550 km²), "Méjean" (330 km²), and "Noir" (200 km²), but also of the causses "Comtal", "Rouge" and of "Sévérac", and many small peripheral causses like causses of "Mende", "Blandas", "Changefèges", "Bégon", etc… No waterway circulates on the surface of the plates, because the rainwater infiltrates in the karstic, generating networks of many swallow-holes and caves, to re-appear in the valleys. Geology of causses and the cévennes.

The windmills inspired many great writers and among them:

ALPHONSE DAUDET, 1840-1897, who wrote in "the secrecy of Cornille Master", "Letters of My Mill":
"... Sunday we went to the mills, by bands. Up there, the millers paid the muscatel. The millers were beautiful like queens, with their rotten of laces and their gold crosses. Me, I brought my fifre, and until the black night one danced of the farandoles. These mills, you see, made the joy and the richness of our country."

RENE BAZIN, 1853-1932, whose Herve Bazin, also writer, were the great nephew, who wrote in connection with the mills of Poitou in "the mill which does not turn any more":
"... The least breeze, which crossed, met it. One did not have any, to make transfer the white wings, that what it is necessary so that the corns glisten, so that a stem of dandelion loses its seeds. A storm made it insane. During the winter, when the wind of north blew, the miller tightened all the fabric, and left only the frame out of rods of chestnut which was enough to turn the grinding stone, and nicely, I assure you."

SAINT-PIERRE-DE-LA-FAGE is a French commune located in the department of Herault, the Languedoc-Roussillon area, populated of 87 Saint-Pierrais in 1999, distributed on 19 km², that is to say 5 hab./km².

Excellent dimanche,
Roger

Greetings Joel.
Just for a few minutes we are on the same page in the gallery today!
Your shot is a very good composition, juxtaposing the windmill and the cross in a balanced way. The details in those stones are superb, and the light below the formidable dark sky is beautiful. I enjoyed seeing the You tube video! Lots of noise from the wind. It is a very well restored and maintained windmill.
Regards and have a pleasant Sunday - ours is nearly finished.

Bonjour Joël

Vraiment superbe.

Bonjour Joel!
Beautiful composition, ages one through környezetről.Extra sharpness, brilliant colors. Very good balance. I just do not understand what you're looking for a Celtic cross in France :-)
I wish you a good Sunday
Csaba

Hello Joël,
The dramatic sky sets the mood for this fine composition. I like very much the inclusion of the old stone cross and its juxtaposition with the windmill. Good natural colours and excellent sharpness throughout.

Hi Joel,
very attractive composition. Beautiful cross in the foreground and a unique wind mill in the center with a spectacular dark clouds as a background. I like the DOF: everything is so crispy sharp that we can admire details and texture of both cross and windmill. The light was fantastic and consequently the colors and the mood of the photo.
Excellent work,
M

Banjour Joel

An amazing scene, a really beautiful composition with a dramatic sky. I wonder, what is the purpose of the timber at the back of the mill? Great sharpness and colours.

cheers

Hello Joël,
This scene really is symbolic or even mystic, comprising several so impressive elements, which look great against the dramatic sky. The lighting and color contrast between the foreground and background is very strong, making the picture looking three-dimensional. Excellent job!
Best regards,
Sergiy

Pascale

Joel,
This is a nicely composed shot using the monument in the foreground to provide balance and depth for the shot. The angle of the shot works well giving the scene a sense of depth and direction. The dark sky adds nice contrast for the brightly lit scene.

Asa

A superb one Joel
The cross and the wind mill stand out beautifully against the clouds.

Have a nice evening.
Amitiés.
Luis.

Bonjour Joel!

Recevez un salut chaleureux ...

hello Joel

very interesting photo. gray stone walls and windmill, combined with the color brown is nice. overcast sky suggests impending storm.
good pov, colors and sharpness. good job!

Ciao
Simonetta

Hello Joel,
a beautiful composition and POV. No wonder this original windmill inspired you to photograph it. Great DOF, and lighting, not to mention the sky!
