Cistercian church, Fontaine-le-Comte.

One sight.
Other sight.

The church of 12th century 53 meters long and 19 meters wide, has a chorus in half dome.
It underwent the “usual” destruction of the One hundred Year old War at the 14th 15th centuries and of the wars of religion of the 16th century.

It is Geoffroi de Loriol, archevèque of Bordeaux, which entrusted to the order of Cistercian the mission of building an abbey, on grounds and forests given between 1135 and 1137 per Guillaume X, count de Poitiers and duke of Aquitaine, which had been excommunicated because of its support brought during five years as from 1130 for the schism of Anaclet II.

After the death of the pope Honorius II, in 1130, two rival popes are elected by the cardinals: The Aimeric cardinal under the name of Innocent II supported by the king of France Louis VI and the Germanic emperor Lothaire III, and the Pierleone cardinal under the name of Anaclet II supported by Roger II duke of Pouille and Calabria. Of synod in council, the schism lasted until the death of Anaclet II in January 1138, which had received the support of Guillaume X.

Guillaume X of Poitiers, born in 1099, dead on April 9th, 1137, which reigned from 1126 to 1137, under the name of Guillaume VIII count de Poitiers, and under the name of Guillaume X duke of Aquitaine, is the father of Aliénor of Aquitaine which became queen of France, then queen of England, but this is another history…

Fontaine-le-Comte is a french commune, located in the department of Vienne of the Poitou-Charentes area, populated of 3113 Fontenois in 1999, distributed out of 19 km², that is to say 166 hab./km².

The commune founded close to a source, fountain, on grounds given by the count of Poitou Guillaume X, taken the name of Fontaine-le-Comte.

Howdy Joel!
Very interesting monastery, interesting info. Good POV and capture. Ideal natural colors. Perfect contrast. Original frame.

Bonjour Joël,

tiens !

Church and houses make a pleasing ensemble of buildings. I like also the framing from the field of wild flowers and the trees on the left; taken altogether it results in an attractive, well balanced composition. Nice, soft light and colours. Good sharpness. Bon dimanche!

Hello Joel,
How do you keep finding these amazing buildings.
This is a superb shot, although I think your two workshop posts would do well on their own, all three are wonderful shots.
Thank you for sharing.

Bonjour Joel,

Very interesting medieval church, solidly built. The other images show the façade and other details of this beautiful architecture. Very good light and great natural colors.

Have a nice sunday

The angle of the shot is great allowing us to see the church from a an angle that gives it depth and direction. The tree on the left provides nice balance for the scene. The lighting and colors are great and the wild flowers in the foreground provide a nice lead in for the shot.

Quel bel édifice, Joël!
magnifique église basse... comme je les aime!
Bonne soirée

Bonjour Joel

Cistercian churches seem to pop up all over France Joel and they all have a lot of character. Nicely composed making good use of the flowers in the foreground.

Bonsoir Joel

Hi Joel,
I like your pov with including foreground floras for adding more color to the view, very nice old church and old houses in same color and materials, lovely corner full in relaxing feel, thanks for sharing WS too.

Hi Joël,
A very pleasant and peaceful atmosphere here in this picture. Soft and well balanced colours and an attractive composition.
Kind regards
