The Octogone. The Octagon. (2 images).

One sight.
Other sight. July 23rd, 2005.

The "Octogone", of the 12th century, classified historic building since 1840.

It is the chapel of the cemetery of "la Maison-Dieu", hospital of the 12th 15th 16th 17th 19th centuries, founded around 1080-1085.
The chapel surmounts an ossuary. One allots the octagonal shape of the monument to figure 8, symbol of the résurection since Saint-Amboise, death being regarded as a new birth, the entry in the eternal life. This choice of an octagonal plan meets for chapels of cemeteries, perhaps inspired by or other French or foreign chapels.

The chapel is mainly decorated with interior or external sculptures. The frontage is decorated of the four evangelists, Saint-Marc, Saint-Luc, Saint-Matthieu and Saint-Jean.

the "Octogone" presents paintings on the veins of the chapelle.
One also sees in Montmorillon, the Notre-Dame church, pressed on the crypt Sainte-Catherine, decorated murals of the end 12th century, and the Saint-Laurent chapel decorated with murals made during second half of the 19th century.

These three monuments belong to the “Valley of the Frescos, "La Vallée des Fresques”.

The VALLEY of GARTEMPE RIVER concentrates from Saulgé to Saint-Savin, in Vienna, several builbings decorated with frescos of the 11th to 19th centuries, and is called for that, the FRESCOS VALLEY.

Gartempe is a river of Poitou and of the Limousin, which takes its source close to the village of Pétillat, the commune of Peyrabout in the department of Creuse, and is thrown in the Creuse river close of "la Roche-Posay" in the department of Vienne, after a way of almost 200 kilometers. It crosses remarkable canyons in granitic landscapes, downstream from "Les Portes de l'Enfer", "The Hell Doors” to Lathus in Vienne.

Montmorillon is a french commune, located in the department of Vienne of the Poitou-Charentes area, populated of 6898 Montmorillonnais in 1999, divided on 57 km², that is to say 121 hab./km².

Of medieval origin, Montmorillon proposes to the visitors a broad inheritance, made of houses, private mansions, chapels, churches etc…

The novelist Régine Deforges in is originating. She took part in the creation of the biennial living room of the book of Montmorillon. She is also at the origin of the idea of the City of the Writing and the trades of the book, unique in France, following the example of other foreign cities.

Régine Deforges, French writer born on August 15th, 1935 in Montmorillon, adopts a very free tone, to defend the women's right to only assume itself, including in their sexuality.

She published in 1981 "La Bicyclette Bleue", "The Blue Bicycle", first volume of a trilogy which also includes “101 avenue Henri Martin” and "le diable en rit encore".
In 1968, she republished under the title “Irène”, “Le Con d'Irène”, erotic novel of Louis Aragon clandestinely published in 1928. the book was seized for its erotic contents!…

Hi Joel,
Beautiful shot of this chapel with attractive composition, the colours and lights are splendid, the clouds adds a lot to the mood. Beautiful architecture, indeed, excellent note as usual. Tfs! Have a nice day!

Pierre

Very interesting Joel, unique I think. Light management on this one is awesome and the layers of shadow make the shot really work. Detail in the sky completes the effect well. Great work.

Amicalement,
Charo
