Saint-Divitien priory church, in Frescos Valley

One sight.
Other sight.

(Work around and in the church complicated the catch and prevented the sight of the interior friezes).

The Saint-Divitien church of the 11th 13th 19th centuries is dedicated to Saint-Divitien, who lived with the 11th century, near to Sainte-Radegonde, patron saint of Poitou.
It is a romanesque church, with Gothic chorus of the 13th century, with single nave, which comprises a cupola. Its octagonal bell-tower shelters a bell of 1728.

It is under the episcopate of Mgr Pie, (1849-1880), that decorative paintings are carried out in the church.
Geometrical friezes are painted on a white paint recovering the walls and of the checkerworks coloured on the barrel of the columns, as well as liturgical instruments and religious symbols.

In medieval Europe, the religious buildings were not completed that if they were painted.
In Poitou, and in particular in Montmorillonnais Country, this tradition of mural decoration is expressed with the Middle Ages then with the Second Empire.
These decorations, intended to honor God, were also used as teaching supports to teach with faithful, the sacred History, the religious symbols, the dogmas.

The VALLEY of GARTEMPE RIVER concentrates from Montmorillon to Saint-Savin, in Vienna, several romanesque churches decorated with frescos of the 14th century, and is called for that, the FRESCOS VALLEY.

Gartempe is a river of Poitou and of the Limousin, which takes its source close to the village of Pétillat, the commune of Peyrabout in the department of Creuse, and is thrown in the Creuse river close of "la Roche-Posay" in the department of Vienne, after a way of almost 200 kilometers. It crosses remarkable canyons in granitic landscapes, downstream from "Les Portes de l'Enfer", "The Hell Doors” to Lathus in Vienne.

Saulgé is a french commune, located in the department of Vienne of the Poitou-Charentes area, populated of 980 Saulgéens in 1999, divided on 63 km², that is to say 16 hab./km².

Another well composed architectural shot Joel. \A classic old church.
Once again good light management of light and shade.

Ian

Verry good picture of this beautifull church.Best regards.Alin.

Bonjour Joel,

Beautiful medieval church captured in nice colors and good details. The images in WS complement the main photo. Very good note too.

Greetings
Leonor

Your three images give us a fairly comprehensive view of this old priory church. Although WS1 is similar to this main post, I think this POV is slightly better as the bell tower is more clearly seen. Excellent detail with the extra touch of colour from the Tricolors.

Hello, Joel!

A simple architecture, without many details, but equally beautiful! The sky is a wonderful background! Excellent colors and sharpness! Well done!

Hi Joel,
Very nice a typical medieval church with simply gardening, tidy shoot to show it standing good at the road side, distinct photos, thanks for sharing WS too.
