Triennial Bruges 2018: Liquid City
5/5/2018 to 16/9/2018 - www.triennalebrugge.be

Spiegelrei t.h.v. the Jan Van Eyckplein

The statue of Jan Van Eyck is face to face with a blue whale, a gigantic sculpture built from waste material collected from the plastic soup that poses a daily threat to all life on earth.

In 2018, the Triënnale will settle for the second time in Bruges. The triennial contemporary art trail, with surprising installations by renowned artists and architects, is spread over the entire city center. The Triennale investigates the future of a city like Bruges and wants to be a safe beacon. Bruges as a flowing city, open and involved, a motor of social, cultural and political change. Bruges as a breeding ground for innovation. Just as the medieval Bruggeling actively shaped its city, the current citizen shares his dreams and wishes about living together in Bruges. Triennial Bruges 2018 stimulates interaction and creates a new urban foundation. The liquid city, literally surrounded by water, becomes a metaphorical Liquid City. A continuous artistic movement, that sometimes stormy and then gently lurching through the city.

hope you can enjoy.

Hello John,
It's a fascinating and terrifying sculpture, and I had to read more about it on the internet. It was a great idea to make a sculpture like this, of that kind of material, and it is strangely beautiful. This is an interesting complement to Lars' photo the other day of the scrap metal wall art in Dublin. I like the inclusion of the sightseeing boat under the whale's fin. It was a slight pity you couldn't include the Van Eyck statue as well, for a greater effect, but maybe there was not room enough. In any way it's a very interesting and well taken photo, and clearly original.
Kind regards,

Hello John,

I like the way it threatens to jump over the bridge. The tourists in the passing tour boat seem enthralled. An innovative use of recycled plastic waste. I can spot some Chinese characters on some of the parts. Tfs!

Lepo pokazano, dobar kontrast, lepe boje, lepo uhvacen trenutak. Lepa skulptura kita i deo grada sa lepim belim oblacima.

Beautifully shown, good contrast, beautiful colors, beautifully captured moment. Beautiful sculpture of the whale and part of the city with beautiful white clouds.
Good text about the used technique and the elements of the image.
I wish you a nice and peaceful night, all the best in the new week that started, good luck.

Hallo John,
Vele groeten, Paul

Hi John,

The presence o0f the people is animating the scene. The buildings or houses are framing well the blue whale. The point of view is showing the details of of the artworl the BLue Whale. Have a nice day.

Hello John,
The phantasy of an artist has no limits !
Who would get this idea to use waste material to create such a beuatiful artwork.
And you've observed it perfcetly and capured.
Very good TE job.
TFS and best regards

Hallo John,

Hello John, What a strange new artwork in Bruges. But the two bikers do not like it, they look in the other side :). Original picture from Bruges.

Kind regards Malgo

Dag John

Beautiful whale sculpture made from waste, but posted in the old town quarter bridge and made good contrast to the scene, John.
People enjoy the idea of it, the picture included building architecture's and canal action as well.
Good afternoon,

Hello John,

How symbolic that this beautiful statue has been made from threatening, plastic waste, showing a use for the material, rather than casting it into the sea! It looks as if the blue whale is returning the waste to dry land.
It's a great use of the materials and you have done an exceptional job of capturing it to reveal its imposing beauty.

My warm regards,
Bev 😊

Dear John,

Now, that's what I call an interesting piece of art. Besides, its a good composition with the boat under the wings of the whale and the cyclist at the right.

Best Wishes,

Bonjour, cher ami John,

Dag John This is the sweet revenge of a whale: She ate too much plastic at sea and consequently transformed herself into this monument, bursting out of water to eat careless polluters ! Stunning and quite significant artistry masterly captured. Groeten

John, here you present us a really thought-provoking and inventive artwork and one wonderfully can see its dimensions be help of the people around. In spite of the backlight the exposure is perfect. Hats off!
Thank you also for the second photo of this whale. Two great contributions here!
Have a nice weekend! I hope you are fine.

Hi John
A beautiful compo overpowered by the gigantic whale sculpture with good sense of size. The straight on viewpoint makes it real special and always gives us sense of joy filled with charm. It's precisely grabbed, Congrats
Best regards

Hi John.
Colorist and original sculpture of this whale made with disposable material, is a great contrast between modernity and the great classical environment that surrounds it. Cyclists are a good bonus.
A fantastic photo, with beautiful natural colors, very good lighting and excellent sharpness.
Enjoy, Sunday.
Very best regards.

Hello John,
It was a good idea to turn waste into a nice sculpture. On facebook, I keep seeing videos of people turning plastic into bricks or trinkets. I hope we can recycle more effectively.

Hello John,
a very good contribution to Trekearth, it is a pleasant photo but also shows how threatend the environment nowadays is. Godd idea to wait until the boat is in position under the fin of the whale.
Kind regards,

Hi John,
Very good capture of this huge blue whale jumping out of the pond ! How cleverly built with waste material ! I really admire those artists of recuperation.
