Information

I visited the cellars of the old cathedral Sint Donaas, which had been demolished for two centuries, but the remains found have been restored very nicely by the owner of the hotel, which is now in the same place.
Many people around Bruges do not know about the existence of these well-restored cellars.

A little bit History:
The collegiate church of St. Dona in Bruges was the main church of the city as the court church of the counts of Flanders and stood on the (walled) Burg, opposite the town hall and next to the residence of the count. The church became the Cathedral of St. Dona when the Diocese of Bruges was founded in 1559 and remained there until the end of the ancien regime (1795). The church was named after its patron saint, Donatian of Reims
In 1799, the French troops removed all the works of art from the now-disappeared Saint Dona Cathedral. One of those artworks was "Madonna with Kanuri Joris van der Paerle" by Van Eyck from 1436. On 28 April 1799 the French revolutionaries sold the cathedral in public. The cathedral was demolished in the following years. The grave of Jan van Eyck was also lost during that demolition.

I hope you can enjoy.

Hello John,
It's an unusual an unexpected view from a cathedral, but your note explains the circumstances. The old walls have been nicely incorporated into the hotel and the elegant decorations of the room, which now serves a purpose unknown to me. The soft red carpet creates a warm contrast to the white and grey walls and ceiling. The arches in the WS are beautifully restored and would create a good atmosphere for whatever function that area has been given. Both photos are taken with a very carefully handled light and as always the sharpness is superb.
Kind regards,
Gert

Hi John,

The length of the room is creating depth. The point of view iw showing the details of the restored remain of the cathedral. The surrounding light has a good effect on the colours. Have a nice day.

Hallo John,
Een mooi voorbeeld hoe de oude architectuur mooi samengaat met de nieuwere delen. De oude muren en stenen passen uitstekend hier en vormen een mooi patroon. Uitstekende belichting en prettige, warme kleuren.
Lars

Hello John,

This is an unusual photograph for you, yet your notes explain perfectly why you visited the site and the historical importance of what you photographed.
For a cellar, it has a very palatial atmosphere, commensurate with the style and importance of the hotel. There would be no problem using this area for functions or meetings and it would certainly have a great atmosphere.
You have composed the photograph well, placing the pillar strongly and bringing out the textural details of the walls and the carpet.

My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Olá John,

Hello John,
I am a bit confused, is this a cathedral or a hotel? It looks more like a hotel lobby than a cathedral.

MT

Hello John, the interesting and surprising interior of this old cathedral. It looks quite modern display here. Nice stone walls.

Kind regards Malgo

Hi John
Very good image, great colours and detail, spacious and empty which seems to have a story to tell. The red carpet pulls the eye almost instantly. Nice shot.
Best regards

Hello John,

A good interior shot of the cathedral with excellent sharpness and a pleasant diffused light. Interesting textural contrasts between the rough stone at left and the smooth more modern floor & ceiling. Tfs!

Hello John,
A curious mix of ancient and modern architecture, but everything is explained by your interesting note. The point of view allows us to fully appreciate the stark contrast in styles. Excellent light management with very good rendering of the colours and the beautiful textural detail. I look forward to seeing more of this unusual place.

Dag John.

Amicalement

john

in some aspects it looks like a modern structure with a touch of rustic, but reading your note I understood these walls are part of a medieval building. nice view.

take care

We can see it isnt a typical shape of cathedral cellar, but I think it is a perfect exhibition room and an intersting place

Good morning John,
Not bad for a cellar ! Your photo is very well-taken with a good POV, partly diagonal.
Great management of light and colour.
The hotel-keeper has done this restoration with a lot of taste. However, I would find it difficult to spend time in a place with no opening onto daylight.
I have found an old picture of this defunct cathedral on Internet.
Is the new cathedral situated nearby ?
Thanks for sharing and have a god weekend.
Kind regards.
Marie-Louise.
