History:
The Burg square, the heart of Bruges
The Burg square is one of the earliest inhabited places of the city. People settled
here as early as in the second and third centuries of our era. In the ninth century,
the count of Flanders chose the Burg square as his base of operation. At that time, a
fortification 􀀉 had been built here in defense against violent viking attacks.
In the tenth century, Saint-Donatian’s church was built. The clergymen affiliated with
this church were headed by a provost. They were also amongst the most important
officials in the count’s entourage. At the beginning of the twelfth century, the provost
had become so powerful that Count Charles the Good 􀀊 decided to discharge
him. But before he had had a chance to do so, the count was brutally murdered in
the church in 1127. The whole of Europe was shocked by the event.
After numerous structural alterations, the church was finally given its gothic appearance
􀀋. Unfortunately, like many others, the church was destroyed during the
French occupation. In 2002, when Bruges was Cultural Capital of Europe, a contemporary
pavilion by the Japanese architect Toyo Ito 􀀌 was built in the very same
place. The shape of the water encircling the pavilion refers to the architecture of the
former church, a centralized structure 􀀍.
The Town Hall 􀀎 dates from the fourteenth century. Before that period, the City
Council of Bruges met in the Market Square. After a fire, they decided to move their
headquarters to the Burg Square. Until the French occupation, the Council also had
judicial authority.

Hello John,

You had a beautiful day for this photograph, the sky is blue, the colours are bright and there is lots of activity in the square, to animate this lovely setting.
The buildings have their own elegant beauty, each in a different style and make an attractive backdrop for the alfresco cafes and the strolling figures.
As always, a well chosen aspect ofor your composition.

Have a lovely day,
Bev :-)

Hello John,
You have managed to include a wonderful array of architecture in this wide angle view. The many people wandering around and taking pictures helps create an agreeable animated mood. The beautiful architectural detail is very well depicted under a pleasant ambient light.

Hello John,

very fine picture from Bruges and this main place which I remember very well from my last visit. The location was well animated by much people, visitors, tourists ... TFS this wonderful view.

With regards from Luxembourg

Hello John, thanks for reminding me achieving my first 1500 posts... every picture is counted as important.
Beautiful shine upon the Belfry and the big square in Bruges. As every city has its main square, a Plaza-Mayor in Spain and Piazza di-Duomo in italia, a large gathering place from old times and the tradition is going on.
Fine detailed photo, exquisite architecture, my cong.'s.

Hallo John,

Dag John I am always astonished by the good 'state of conservation' seen on the historic buildings you use to take pictures of. In this large square the talent of yesteryears architects is a pleasure for the eyes, especially when I enlarge your picture at 300% on my screen; thanks to your full-frame sensor. Groeten

John, this is another most worth seeing photo of this remarkale city. All the visible architectural details are a real feast for the eyes. I like how the belfry towers all this architectural splendour in a wonderful way.
Greetings from warm and sticky Westphalia!

Hi John.
After an idle time on the page, I am with you again, first I was on a trip to the Canaries, then there were some family problems, which took time to solve, then another trip through the Baltic capitals. Now it seems that everything is back to normal and again I am here, to enjoy with your photos and that you like me.

Wonderful images in your gallery, these last weeks, the view of the square is great, with the tower rising behind like a beacon.
Good perspective of the image, very pleasing to the eye.
Colorful, sharp and bright are captured excellently.
Have a good weekend.
Warm greetings.
Luis.
