The medieval (Gothic) structures have been restored, renovated or reconstructed. The question arises, how authentic they are still in shape and construction. Also counterfeiting occurs, such as at the Markt in Brugge. There are only the Halle and the Belfry still authentic medieval. The rest of the 'medieval' buildings on the Market are mimics of the 19th and 20th centuries. That's why paintings are also displayed on this website. They show the medieval buildings through the eyes of contemporaries, although we must also be careful. Medieval paintings are naturalistic, but not realistic. A cityscape on a medieval painting is not a naturalistic representation of a truly existing city. It serves as a decor for a generally religious presentation. The houses shown, however, are derived from the existing architecture that the painter saw.

Bonjour, cher ami John,

Amicalement

Serge

Good day sir.
Beautiful view of the moment, a good text ...
Good work, nice demonstration architecture and details on the facade, good contrast, nice colors, nice moment caught with cyclists and pedestrians. Beautiful facade and details.
Good article about the technique and the elements of the image.
Nice afternoon and all the best for the weekend, good luck.

Dear John,

If only you had another five meters of distance behind you, you would not have had to cut the bicycles wheels off. Nonetheless, I like the photo very much with the perfectly sharp appearance of the restored 17th century building and the blurred image of the cyclist in the foreground.

Warmest regards, John. Have a good weekend,

Bulent

Hi John,

The presence of the people is animating the scene. The point of view is showing the details of the facade of the building. The sharpness is excellent. Have a nice day.

Pierre

Hello John,
You raise a very interesting question in your commentary. Just how authentic are the many 'restored' buildings that we see before us today many of which were razed to the ground as a result of war damage. It is perhaps not good to dwell on this as photographers but to capture the moment as it is today before our lens. However authentic it might be this shop façade is still very attractive and you have captured it perfectly under a pleasing ambient light. Very good rendering of the colours and textural detail.

Hello John, once again the distinctive shape of a medieval building; restored, renovated or reconstructed? I do not mind, as long as this type of old architecture is not lost.
It reminds us of which part of the world we are in for one thing.
This a very beautiful building. The sunlight helps to show off its lovely details.
Regards Jean.

Hello John,

WE may not be sure how authentic this facade is but it is still a building to be viewed and admired!
I love the ornamentation around the windows and the distinctive stepped roof.
It's tall shape, squashed between two very different buildings, emphasises its character.
You have collected the details with fine details and true colours.

My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hi John
An enchanting shot for such a scenic facade beautifully rich coloured and nicely detailed taken from dead straight on pov blended by first rate clarity. The eye popping brown tones have greatly influenced viewers' eyes while the passers by lend a lovely touch. Nice piece of some exquisite photo work, Congrats
Best regards

hello john..nice bright capture here for us,the busy life of a city, people rushing for their lunch, nice lively scene my friend! dale

Hello John,
This is a nice building even if it is wholly or partly "fake". It sticks to the style of the city, although the large ground floor window truly belongs to the late 20th century. I appreciate that you timed the photo with some persons walking by. The slightly blurred and partly cut off cyclist adds some movement and liveliness to the photo.
Kind regards,
Gert

goede plaat john

Dear John,

Worthy composition with the lady, who brings the feel of motion into the picture.

Best Wishes,
Gy.

Hallo John,
Vele groeten, Paul

Hello John,
The vivid colors and the charming architecture draw the attention to the frame. The rich textures help, too. The motion blur on the cyclist is a nice bonus.

MT

Hallo John,

Dag John I don't know much about classic architecture, but nothing prevents me from appreciating your professional poster. Elegant stone carvings, strtict verticals and fine contrast due to side lighting compose the attraction.

Restored or not, this building has a magnificent appearance, enhanced by those bricks.
The sunny day and the passing people were favourable for your shot.

What a beautiful facade, I think the people in the past had a lot of patience to decorate the houses, today the facades are mostly flat and without small decorative elements
regards Ryszard

Hello John
It doesn't matter if the houses are reconstructed or original, they are still beautiful as they are. But interesting note on the origins of the buildings in the market in Brugge and the reference to the painters. Never thought about this really.
Intriguing how the older brick buildingis squeezed in between the two more contemporary buildings. The moving cyclist adds a good touch of dynamics's too.
have a great time
Daniel

Street action with the passing biker-lady and other's, a magnificent old façade under shining bright daylight, John, well rendered sight. Notable are the small black iron enhancements on the wall with artistic-design.
Elegant modern shop is a nice contrast to the restored old architecture's style.
Have a nice Sunday afternoon,
Ike

Hello John,

good image of this facade, the architecture is beautiful and the composition with people walking by is very nice, I like it,

Best regards,

Sergio

Hi dera John,

Unique and very atractive this façade. I like the colors of these bricks too. The girl on bike is perfect. Great timing.

Cheers

Ricardo

Dag John

Hello John,
