Masaya - La boca del infierno

Here some nighttime views of the crater of Masaya Volcano. Last time you saw pictures of it taken during the day. These are handheld pictures (no tripod or suitable rock or wall present).

Masaya Volcano is located near the town of the same name. In the left upper corner you can see some of the city lights.
With an estimated population of 140.000 Masaya is located nearly halfway Managua, the capital and Granada, the most visited city in the country.

The Spanish conquistadores called the volcano ‘La boca del infierno’ (‘Mouth of hell’). In the pre-Columbian era the volcano was called ‘Popogatepe’ (‘Burning mountain’).

The last eruption of the volcano was in 1772.
In 2001 an explosion took place in the crater and rocks were thrown 500 meters into the air.

Information from Wikipedia.

This is the only volcano in the western hemisphere where the crater rim can be reached by car. Because of the easy accessibility I visited the crater twice, once during the day and once in the evening immediately after sunset.

The visits at night are very popular. Only for a limited time (about ten minutes for the nightly visit) you can stay on the crater wall and only with a limited number of people at the same time. According to the authorities this is because of the gases rising from the crater and to guarantee safety.
I'm not so sure that the gases are dangerous because the security can stay there longer. I suspect that limited time was adjusted to keep everything easily under control.

As said before, this crater wall is extremely popular after sunset and every evening there’s a traffic jam of the many visitors.
Other volcanoes in Nicaragua you have to climb on foot and are a lot quieter.

On one side of the crater there is a parking space and from there it is quite dark to walk to the crater. Once arrived at the rim (just a very short walk) the red glow and the sound deep in the crater are impressive.

Two TE members can perhaps be disappointed.
I'm sorry Malgo, but unlike in New Zealand, there are no flights over the volcanoes in Nicaragua. (It pays to sit at the window during your international flight to Managua. Especially when you arrive from the south. I traveled via Panama but unfortunately did not have a window seat).
And Gert, I’m really sorry. I absolutely liked to include some people here … but nobody wanted to pose on this picture …

Bonjour Paul

La bouche de l'enfer! Super contraste chromatique et j'aime bien la ville tranquille au pied du volcan.
Quelle aventure!

Hello Paul,

What a genuinely impressive scene and photograph!
The contrasts of the glowing, molten rock and the dark b/g are awesome!
I like how you have included a few artificial lights from the city, in the b/g, which helps us to appreciate the positioning of the two and seems to give the impression of a deep, fiery hole, leading towards the habitations!

My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Dag Paul,

Om dit zuiver uit de hand te nemen, moet u een zeer stabile houding kunnen aannemen.
Want dit is een schitterende foto, dat we zeer weinig tezien krijgen.
Het is uniek en uitzonderlijk mooi.
Prachtig foto werk, bedankt.

Groeten uit een vrij warm Oost-Vlaanderen,

Hello Paul,
If you had in mind to post the most colourful photo of the day you probably won the competition. But I am very disappointed, because I have a strong suspicion you didn't even ask someone to look down the crater in front of you. Well, it's an impressive sight anyway, and as well exposed and sharp as you could possibly hope for. This must be the ultimate blue hour photo.
Best regards,

Ciao Paul, great view of amazing place, wonderful colors and splendid light, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio

Hallo Paul,
Een indrukwekkend gezicht van de mond van de vulkaan. De kleuren zijn schitterend, vooral dat heldere rood omgeven door donkerte met enkele diepblauwe tinten. Dit moet heel bijzonder zijn van dichtbij te zien.

Hi Paul,

An impressive quintet of images depicting volcanoes, with explosive impact! I dont know what photo shop technique you've used but it resembles a painting, perhaps in the style of Van Gogh. Wonderful orange red and blue colour contrasts. Tfs!

ciao Paul,
I didn't know this very impressive volcanos, very good view whit the fantastic colors of the eruption,
ciao, Giacomo

Hello Paul,
Popogatepe sounds similar to Popocatepetl. I thought that you climbed the volcano on foot. To go there by car?
Fantastic view of the red hell. I would be afraid to look deep into it.

Volcanos are for me fascinating. I have seen a lot of them along the coast of Latin America. In Banos in Ecuador, I saw just the eruption of Tungurahua and the results of the eruption of Guagua Pichincha only one day before.
In Guatemala, I CLIMBED the Pacaya volcano. it was an amazing experience, the ground was hot. and the smell was strong. I also stood on the rim and there was red inside. Later we went into the darkness, seeing only the fire of the volcano.

Kind regrads MAlgo

Hi Paul,
Mükemmel çekim, fotoğraf renkleriyle tabloya dönmüş,belgesel ötesinde bir sanat kompozisyonu.

Hello, Paul!

Impressive view of this volcano, scary but wonderful! The warm colors were very well captured here, and the title is very proper for this place! Very nice job!

Salut Paul,
Impressionnant et j'imagine l'excitation du moment en découvrant the phé,omène de si près, bon effet de contraste de teintes, pas facile à rendre, bien fait.

Good morning Paul,
Very impressive nignt photo of the crater spitting fire ! Indeed, it does look like "La boca del infierno" !
Your photo is just perfect, with the yellow flame at the bottom, the enormous red glow then fading away on the edges, and the far away city lights against the blue hour sky.
TFS and have a great weekend.
Kind regards.

Hello Paul,
It must be a difficult job to take a photo of an active volcano at night. I can even get the heat of lava and the smell of sulfur from here. In spite of all the difficulties, it was a beautiful photo frame.
