Nothing special, just a glimpse from the small port of Duong Don on the Vietnamese island of Phu Quoc. Along the creek running through the town there were lots of small boats like this, most of them looking old and tired and not quite reliable.

Phu Quoc, or more precisely Phú Quốc, is an island outside the southwestern tip of Vietnam, actually much closer to the Cambodian mainland. The northern half of the island is a military area, closed to foreigners, where the Vietnamese army is prepared to ward off an unlikely Cambodian invasion. The southern part is becoming increasingly touristy. When I was there in early 2008 the island was still fairly quiet, but since then an international airport has been built and there are direct flights from several European cities, including Stockholm. I estimate there are about ten times as many hotels as ten years ago. So this is another place I have no wish to go back to.

Here is a larger version.

I enclose two workshops showing more boats anchored along the creek of Duong Don (more correctly spelled Dương Đông). One workshop shows nicer boats, the other one many boats.

Hi Gert. In fact you are right, knowing that what you've seen has changed and that there has been a cement invasion, hotels and tourists is a bad thing. So I am very happy that the agreements between USA and Cuba are wrecked ... eehehe .. an American economic invasion would lead to the destruction of the nature of my favorite island. The photos are very beautiful, colorful and perfectly show the scenes of everyday life from this island.Have a nice Sunday and thanks,Luciano

Hello Gert,
I haven't been in the south of Vietnam but I read about this island. You are lucky that you've been able to visit it in a better era. Phú Quốc has become a major tourist destination in Vietnam.
In the north of the country I was told that the south was much more touristic and I had already very mixed feelings about the north.
You have no wish to go back to this island and I have no wish to ever visit the south of Vietnam :)
For people who are already happy when they can take a beautiful picture Phú Quốc will probably still be a place that sattisfies them. But pictures seldom tell the real atmosphere.
I see that in March you had the same dull sky in the deep south as I had in the north :)
The image looks very charming with the small blue boats, the houses on stilts and the palm trees. Nice reflections on the foreground too.
Both pictures in the WS could have been excellent main photos too.
Best regards, Paul

Bravo et amitié

Hello Gert,
I think I would be a bit wary taking a cruise in that, but it does look very picturesque and well worth a photo. Nicely framed with excellent colours and clarity and some nice reflections. I like the contrast between the peeling blue paintwork and the red rusty corrugated tin roofs.

Hi Gert.

Good documentary shot of one of this island's daily life scenes, and a fine moment frozen in time. Fantastic warm cold color contrasts between the rusty shanty town shacks and the blue boat and water, with superb reflections. Tfs!

Bonjour, cher Gert,
Trois belles images offertes à nos yeux avides !
J'aime vos notes d'accompagnement, vous savez nous faire partager votre ressenti à propos des villages, lieux ou autres visités.
C'est très bien, ainsi, nous avons l'impression de participer à vos pérégrinations.
Mille mercis.
Amitiés.
Philippe

Hello Gert
I hear the last time several people complaining about how touristic Vietnam has become. Probably they use nowadays better boats to serve all the visitors from the west. It will be increasing difficult to take authentic picture like your excellent post of today.
Have a good Sunday, Groet Rob

Hi Gert
I also stopped for a moment and wondered which one I would post as the main photo - this one or the more colourful workshop. You know I'm more of a landscape than people photographer but I have to agree, this shot shows a fascinating slice of daily life in close up so it's a more intersting photo.
Overall, a lovely series of three images depicting this corner of the world.
Best wishes
Kasia

Hello Gert,

Another good series of photographs and whilst the w/s are interesting, they don't have the dynamism of this main photograph. The boat seems to whipping through the water, a surprise to us, as we consider its appearance and perhaps, a surprise to the young man, on the left, who is watching with interest!
It's a very descriptive shot, showing so much of the environment but also, showing some lovely reflective details and a fine composition.

Have a good Sunday,
Bev :-)

Hello Gert,
Given your note, chances are that this truly is a historic photo of a place which has changed beyond recognition in merely ten years' time. It's a very good impression from daily life with the old, rusty boat passing by in front of the old and equally rusty houses. The colours are very well-saturated and stand out on this cloudy day. The reflections are wonderful too, with a good level of distortion.
Lars

Ciao Gert, lovely composition with nice people and a lot of boats, fascinating reflections, wonderful natural colors, excellent clarity and splendid light, very well done, my friend, ciao Silvio

Hello Gert,

It are three full-fledged pictures
We get an excellent view of the very busy small port.
An excellent depth and perspective, also the person is a nice addition to the scale.
Composition and presentation are pleasant to look at.
Very well done, TFS

Have a nice Sunday,
John

Hej Gert,
Nothing new on this shot I guess! Rusty corrugated iron sheds and those boats show a lot of signs of decay. All those brown stains make me wonder about the condition of wood on the boat. Excellent daily life shot.

You have a lot of documentary and reportage photos in your archiv, another photo showing hard working people on the Mekong river, very well captured
regards Ryszard

Hi, Gert.
Certainly on seeing the old boat, one wonders in its safety of flotation, but the same thing we could ask, in the security of the houses that we see in the background, a good image that shows the poverty of these places, where only the abundant vegetation, makes more pleasant these corners.
Excellent POV, with very good lighting, color and sharpness.
Very good work.
Enjoy a happy Sunday.
Very best regards.
Luis.

Hello Gert, very good photo of this interesting scene of daily life with interesting boat, very well captured in this interesting image, with good clarity, light, color and quality. A great job perfectly done, my congratulations, my friend. Thank you for sharing this interesting work.

Good night and happy start to the week.
All the best from the south of Spain.
Angel.

Hello dear Gert,
Very nice capture of this life on water in Vietnam.
Very good pov, layout and shapness. Not an easy life.

Dear Gert,

You showed us a nice everyday glimpse as always.

Best Wishes,
Gy.

Ciao Gert
beato te che hai visto questo luogo quando non era ancora stato "colonizzato", anzi, grazie per avercelo mostrato.
Purtroppo (o meno male) le cose cambiano, il mondo si evolve e anche i luoghi.
Saluti
Carlo

Hello Gert,
The colors and reflections in this frame are quite attractive. It's a well-framed photo, too. The workshop photos are wonderful and the definition of the sky in them is better.
Regards,
MT

Hello,
Yes, that boat is not in the best condition to function normally but they manage to deal with it like this. Nice colors in your port scene, it's sad when you see how poor some people are...

Hi Gert
This scene looks very Latin American.
Cancun had a similar appearance before the construction of the many resorts.
Interesting sample of the daily life.

Hi Gert
ya, i love this type of scene, its great to see such cultural living conditions and activity. interesting to hear about its advances - well, some people may not think it's advancing, but perhaps the airport and hotels will create jobs, just as long as it doesn't take away from the rustic beauty we see here.

no doubt this was the best choice as the main post, the boat up close and its reflections steal the show. awesome
cheers
craig

Hi Gert,

I like the reflections on the water. The point of view is showing the details of the moving boat. You have captured well the action of the men working on board. Have a nice day.

Pierre

Hello Gert,
Boats in decayed blue and huts with rusty tin walls, but the palm trees in fresh green.
Vietnam is slowly progress, and I am sure it had change since 2008.
Anyway, the composition gave a vibrant scene of life along the river, clear and distinct.
Good afternoon,
Ike

Hello Gert,

good image of this port, I like the composition with the old boat and its reflection, I also like the little chaos we can see in the background with the different constructions, well seen,

Best regards,

Sergio

Hello Gert,
Love the contrast in colours in this image.
Well framed as well.
Good notes to.

Hello, Gert!

I've been looking at Paul's photos of Vietnam, and it must be a very interesting place to visit, and here you show us a very nice daily life capture of the this colorful port, with beautiful details to see, everything captured with excellent light and sharpness! Wonderful composition!

Hello Gert,

I have read that this island is very nice but probably it is very touristy. It was too far in the south for me to visit and I was not so much interested in the south Vietnam, I had not enough time anyway.

Beautiful all thre pictures. The view of so many boats in WS is most impressive. The colourful boats are lovely but I think your choice for the main upload was good - here we can see old and rusty boats, the people working on them but also the rather horrible houses. Excellent presetation.

Hei Gert

Veldig flott:)

Hilsen Erling
