After making so many trips around the world, I would not have thought I could still excite myself so much. But the view of the square of Samarkand really leaves you speechless, it does not even seem true that such a place can exist. I was lucky enough to watch the night light show and it's really amazing, I'll show you the pictures of the show later.
The Registan was the heart of the ancient city of Samarkand of the Timurid dynasty, now in Uzbekistan. The name Registan means "Sandy place" or "desert" in Persian.
The Registan was a public square, where people gathered to hear royal proclamations, heralded by blasts on enormous copper pipes called dzharchis - and a place of public executions. It is framed by three madrasahs (Islamic schools) of distinctive Islamic architecture.
The three madrasahs of the Registan are: the Ulugh Beg Madrasah (1417–1420), the Tilya-Kori Madrasah (1646–1660) and the Sher-Dor Madrasah (1619–1636). Madrasah is an Arabic term meaning school.
The Ulugh Beg Madrasah, built by Ulugh Beg during the Timurid Empire era of Timur—Tamerlane, has an imposing iwan with a lancet-arch pishtaq or portal facing the square. The corners are flanked by high minarets. The mosaic panel over the iwan's entrance arch is decorated by geometrical stylized ornaments. The square courtyard includes a mosque and lecture rooms, and is fringed by the dormitory cells in which students lived. There are deep galleries along the axes. Originally the Ulugh Beg Madrasah was a two-storied building with four domed darskhonas (lecture rooms) at the corners.
The Ulugh Beg Madrasah was one of the best clergy universities of the Muslim Orient in the 15th Century CE. Abdul-Rahman Jami, the great Persian poet, scholar, mystic, scientist and philosopher studied at the madrasah.Ulugh Beg himself gave lectures there. During Ulugh Beg's government the madrasah was a centre of secular science.
In the 17th century the ruler of Samarkand, Yalangtush Bakhodur, ordered the construction of the Sher-Dor and Tillya-Kori madrasahs. The tiger mosaics on the face of each madrassa are interesting, in that they flout the ban in Islam of the depiction of living beings on religious buildings.
Ten years later the Tilya-Kori Madrasah was built. It was not only a residential college for students, but also played the role of grand masjid (mosque). It has a two-storied main facade and a vast courtyard fringed by dormitory cells, with four galleries along the axes. The mosque building is situated in the western section of the courtyard. The main hall of the mosque is abundantly gilded.

FANTASTICA REGISTAN

Pierre

Hello Luciano,
This is a spectacular photo of a spectacular place. The colors are rendered just right under immaculate light management, steady hands (or a tripod) have kept the image sharp and the composition is effective, yielding a magnificent photo. Well done, congrats!

Wow, what a fantastic first shot from your latest trip. The buildings around the square look amazing and are illuminated so fantastically. The contrast of the golden tones with the blue evening sky is great too. Superb clarity and quality!

Hello Luciano, So this was the hole in my map of Asia :). Really fantastic view, you were lucky to see the night show in the main Samarkand square. Jaw dropping blue hour shot.
It is my dream to see Samarkand and Bukhara. Maybe in autumn I would go?

Have a nice Sunday

Witaj Luciano!
Amazing view, excellent night picture.
Wonderful colors, light and sharpness.
Good work.
Nice sunday.
Krzysztof

Hello Luciano,
You captured a wonderful atmosphere in this well exposed blue hour photo. Certainly the fantastic architecture is the most important element, but this wouldn't have been the same without the crowd of people that have come out to soak up the ambience of early evening.
Did you go on an arranged tour with a guide, or do you speak Russian? Uzbekistan is absolutely on my wish-list, but I would not go with a group and I don't expect a lot of people there to speak English, so I don't know how to make it.
Best wishes,
Gert

Ciao Luciano,
this is definitely one of the best photos from Uzbekistan I have ever seen, it well combines the amazing architecture with the blue hour perfect timing.
Fantastic performance, the highest quality work!
The silhouettes of the people add a lovely touch. This is really encouraging to visit. I wonder if you felt safe there and if the distances between the cities were convenient to do. I am just thinking if this would be reasonable trip for my daughter.

Excellent work,
M

Hello Luciano,
So you didn't go to Cuba :)
But I'm sure that Uzbekistan was an excellent choice. I would also like to visit that country.
The picture seems to come from 'The Thousand and One Nights' stories.
Wonderful illuminated buildings under the blue sky.
Many spectators make the scene lively.
I think I see some soldiers or policemen on the foreground. I suppose that most of the monuments in the country are firmly guarded.
Best regards, Paul

Ciao Caro Silvio,

I was excited by your notes as well as excited by your photograph!

This is truly an amazing scene.
It reminds me of something from an epic film set!
The lighting is so subtle and the whole has been so masterfully captured to show the details of the scene and the mood of the time.
Glorious!

Have a lovely day,
Bev :-)

My cong.s for this impressive blue hour picture, Luciano.
Wide view of the big square in Samarkand, and a superb contrasting three areas over the picture space.: the dark foreground, the illuminated monuments, and (still) blue sky.
Buona serata,
Ike

Ciao

Ciao Luciano,
This is certainly a magical view. The long exposure really shows the illumination perfectly. I also like the contrast of light in the distance, and the darker foreground. The architecture is beautiful, and I can only imagine how breath-taking it must be in person.
