Mumbai - Inside the Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat

Three more pictures taken in the Mahalaxmi Dhobi Ghat.
Frankly, I found it a very interesting visit. Of course there are more dhobi ghats in Mumbai but this one is the largest and the most known.
Not that you will see many tourists there.

The men and women at work reacted somewhat surprising that a foreigner was visiting here and at the same time a little proud.

With my previous picture Andrew wondered how the dhobi ghat is organized so that all the garments and bedding items are returned to the right owners. This is actually the miraculous thing about it. Indeed, it turns out that very little gets lost.

Beverley noticed that in the modern city that Mumbai is becoming, hand washing on such a large scale seems incongruous. In Mumbai and in other places in India you will see that the country has become surprisingly modern … at least on some levels and for some people in society. But on many other levels life is still going on as it used to be.
Despite the fact that it is very hard work for some workers in the dhobi ghat (I think of the men who do the laundry by hand) the positive thing is that it provides work for a lot of people.

Malgo was a little worried that the laundry would not be entirely clean that way.
Yes Malgo, be assured, all the washed laundry is completely ‘Indian clean’.

The light was a bit difficult on my interior pictures here. They’re not of the best quality.
I hope you find them interesting enough to be shown here.
The main picture shows one of the rooms where the ironing is done.

Hallo Paul,

There is always work to be done. This place is no exception. I like the fact that a man in the lower right of the image has time to nap. great note and nice image to study. well done on the capture of life in India.

The backlight was well mananged, no problem here,
A nice and unusual scene from an indoor's of a shop - The owners let you and seem indifferent to your presence with the camera.
Colorful scene.
My best regards,

Bonjour, cher Paul,

Nice working scene from that exotic and mysterious world. I've always found India very interesting...maybe because Mircea Eliade's literature...

Hello Paul, The biggest mystery here is that do not loose any item. Very interesting pictures of this laundry. Amazing scenes and I am sure they were surprised seeing you with the camera. But they didn't care and did their job. Fantastic pictures, I am happy you posted it and unhappy that I haven't seen it in my own eyes.
I saw another Dhobi ghat , but small with the pool.

Kind regrads Malgo

Hello Paul,
Maybe these photos are not artistically or technically among your very best, but to me they are incredibly much more interesting than the great average of postcards shown on TE. We get to see this kind of daily life of hard working people off the tourist track far to seldom. I am glad and surprised that you went to see a place like this. Was it recommended in a guide book or did you stumble upon it almost by coincidence? I think you learned more about Bombay here than the Gateway of India could ever teach you. Did you also study the incredible dabbawala system, where thousands of lunch boxes are brought by train to the city from the suburbs every day?
Kind regards,

Dag Paul,

Mooie reportage zo leert men wat.
Goed foto werk, bedankt.

Groeten uit Oost-Vlaanderen,

Dag Paul

Ciao Paul, interesting daily life scene, wonderful colors and excellent clarity, very well done, my friend, have a good week end, ciao Silvio

Hello Paul, very good picture of this interesting scene of everyday life in the place of ironing, very well captured in this interesting image, with good sharpness, light, color and quality. A great job perfectly done, my congratulations, my friend. Thanks for sharing this interesting work.

Good night and happy weekend.
All the best from the south of Spain.

Hello Paul.
Very interesting note, to understand this mess well ordered, as we read, the image conveys the purest essence of India.
A nice color, which gives more relevance to the image.
Magnificent management of brightness and sharpness, to enjoy with the details.
Well seen and done. I like it.
Enjoy the weekend that starts.
All the best for you.

Hi Paul,
This is what I like very much, the moments of the human's life. This is so beautiful image. Sharp, colorful and well composed
Best regards

Hello Paul,

This really got me thinking!
My surprise was that such big, modern hotels used a hand laundry rather than having an in-house laundry! When I stayed in a big hotel in Karachi, clothes could be left out for the laundry and returned the next day. I wonder now, whether such a place as this was used. It never occurred to me at the time!

Your three photographs really extend our understanding of the processes and involvement in the laundry. They are well worth posting.

I am utterly amazed that, with so much laundry to deal with, almost all the items are returned accurately. It is nearly a miracle!!

Have a good w/e,
Bev :-)

Hi Paul
You have good subject of interest faced by two extreme lighting conditions. as can be seen the brightest part is over exposed and obviously ruins the whole capture. This my sincere comments, nice attempt nevertheless.
Best regards

Bonjour Paul,
Merci beaucoup pour ce post très instructif !
