[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
I visited many places that Gert visited 30 years ago. But China has changed so much that he can't recognize any places. But finally I have found something that hasn't changed at all! Here two pictures of the same place - the Longmen (Dragon Gate) in Xi Shan (Western Mountains) near Kunming. On the left - Gert's photo made 30 years ago and on the right - mine made recently. I use the same idea as in some previous cases - I just put two pictures together, it is better to see similarities and difference. The main difference is that my picture (on the right) is less sharp (wrrr.).

I made this short trip in my last day in Kunming. It was a bit risky as in the same day, in early afternoon we went to Guangzhou (only a bit more than thousand kilometers :)). I haven't realized that the whole walk have no shortcuts. But we were lucky, we didn't miss the high speed train. Btw. Kunming is quite a big city. from the center to South Railway Station one goes by metro 50 minutes.

Hello Malgo,
I am tempted to give you only one point for this, since half of the photo is mine ;-). But you get two points for taking the trouble of going to this place and for stitching the photos together. The flags are gone and the vegetation has changed a bit, but the rocks remain the same after 30 years.
Indeed a nice surprise.
Kind regards,
Gert

Nicou

Hello Malgo,
What a good idea to make this comparison. Excellent!

Only the trees and the visitors looks different, Malgo - a nice idea to compare the time interval's. A stunning place I am sure.
My best regards,
Ike

Philippe

Hello Malgo,

Both pictures showing excellent the height and the difficult access.
You create depth and perspective.
Also a nice panorama too.
Composition and presentation are nice to look at.
Very well done, TFS.

Best regards,
John.

Ha! Ha! Malgo you have certainly shown us how little this place has changed, other than the vegetation and the weather, which are always in a state of change!
It looks as if an umbrella was used in Gert's photograph, probably to protect people from the heat! In your photograph, the weather looks a little duller, or am I mistaken?
I just love this sort of comparison!
I am amazed that you were able to create such a very similar photograph!

My warm regards,
Bev :-)

Hello Malgo,
So nice to see this place twice on photos taken with thirty years in between. Indeed, nothing seems to have changed, even the people are still there. :-) Great photo work and great idea!
Lars

Hello Malgo,

Very informative text with superb composition, good idea to represent it, excellent sharpness with perfect exposure, well done.

warm regards,

swapankumarroy

Hello Malgo,
It's great that in a big city like Kunming you can escape the hustle and bustle by going to this Dragon Gate which at first sight seems to be located quite remote.
I love such hikes on paths cut in the mountain wall, sometimes walking through a tunnel and sometimes with spectacular views.
No idea how long this climb was but China has several sacred mountains where the hike to the top takes many hours or a complete day.
In 1999 I climbed Huashan near Xian. Very spectacular. This Dragon Gate also looks spectacularly located.
You talk about speed trains. They didn't exist in China when I was there. Are they expensive?
Best regards, Paul

Czesc Malgo
Pamiętam zdjecie Gerta sprzed lat... niewiele sie tam zmienilo.

Saluti
Carlo

Hello Malgo,

A surprise for me too, as I was there in 2001/2002 and took a cablecar up and walked down. The view across lake Dianchi was tremendous. Nice comparison photos of then and now. Tfs!

Hi Malgo
Intéressant vue du passer et celle de maintenant, impressionnant d'être là au bord , bonne lumière et couleurs
belle présentation
Belle soirée

Hello Malgo
Splendid idea to take this picture and joined it with the version of Gert he took 30 years ago. I understand he claims half of the points given to you for this post. I would give him some extra points but Have a good evening already had the maximum.
Interesting to find the differences.
Groet Rob

Hello Gert/Malgo,
Your collective work is a lovely then-and-now show and tell. It looks like they chopped down some trees in the 30 years but others are growing in their place. Malgo, in your photo we can see the lake (?) in the distance, thanks to the absence of trees.
Regards,
MT

Hi Malgo,
What a nice idea to find a picture that has remained the same after 30 years !
A good collage and a nice tribute to Gert, the Globe-trotter, soon in competition wit Emka :-)
I can see that the tree over the little temple has hardly grown, no wonder in such a barren place !
I like the way you managed to include the river (or the lake). It adds to the composition, and gives a good perspective.
TFS.
Marie-Louise.
PS I have never been to China.
A lot of people I know, who have been, went on package tours. So the communication was solved by the guides.
One couple I know, went to visit their son, and told me they found it difficult to communicate when they were alone in town . Most people don't speak English. The signs can't be read.... How did you manage ?

Hi Malgo
bravo! Well done indeed!
Too bad we can't give 4 or 6 pts for a photo if we chose to do so :)

This one deserves more than 2 pts. yes, not much has changed, small differences, but nothing too too major. the trees look so different, like a completely different species of tree all together.

excellent work, lots went into this post!
cheers
Craig
