[Note Guidelines] Photographer's Note
A few days ago I opened the file of photos from my very first journey with a digital camera, to Cape Verde in early 2006. I posted several photos from that journey when I was a newcomer to TE a year later, but I must have made very bad choices then, because I have returned to that file several times in later years and found much better photos than those I first selected.

So here I go again. This is from a small town called Cidade Velha, Old City, the first Portuguese settlement on Santiago Island, a short distance from the present capital Praia. I had gone there by bus, taken a walk to a few sights of limited interest and planned to return to Praia. I found a number of people also waiting for a bus. They all looked tired and frustrated, so they had probably been waiting a long time already. I took a few pictures before I left. I don't remember how I got back to the city, but I probably used my position as a rich white European to take a taxi.

This photo mainly appealed to me for the colours and textures and the four persons' expressive body language.

Here is a larger version.

Other persons also waiting in vain for a bus can be seen in two workshop photos.

WS #1

WS #2

This time I will stay in Cape Verde for a few more uploads.

Hello Gert,
A sense of boredom prevails - haven't we all at some time waited for a bus that doesn't turn up? The various facial expressions and 'poses' make for an interesting composition. The colourful buildings provide a nice backdrop. Perhaps, there should be a category on TE of 'Indecisive Moment';-)

Bonjour, cher Gert,

Ciao Gert, nice scene with lovely people, excellent clarity, splendid light, wonderful colors and fine details, very well done, my friend, have a good weekend ciao Silvio

Hello Gert,

Your notes confirm how I have felt about my photographs for quite a while; trends change and what didn't seem appealing a few years ago, now seems bang on trend! I think that's why revisiting archives is just so much fun! I think a lot of people have been posting 'old' photographs recently!

Three very colourful and 'people orientated' photographs.
I was fascinated to see all the ladies wearing scarves on their heads. I can remember that being a fashion but, possibly these ladies wore them because of the heat! We don't often get that problem!
The two w/s were very interesting!
What different impressions were gained from the same spot. One seemed right out in the countryside, the other in the middle of a town! Can the camera lie? Only with the help of a photographer!

Have a great w/e,
Bev :-)

Hi Gert

the sense of time seems different depending of the country, we hurry up in the western countries whereas in some other states, they patiently wait, take their time for the everyday life, and they are right!!

Dobar dan.
Lep pogled i trenutak, dobar tekst ...
Dobar rad sskeniranjem, lepe fotografije u radionici, lepo pokazano mesto i trenutak.
Lepo uhvacen trenutak sa ljudima koji strpljivo cekaju.
Lepa fotografija i secanje.
Zelim vam lepo popodne, sve najbolje za vikend, srecno.

the main post is more clear and well built in terms of photography, but I liked the WS too because they are much more informative. we can even to see an arid slope, the palm trees and a pelourinho (that pilar that was the symbol of the power in royal colonial times). nice views from these islands I want to visit some day.

take care

Bonjour Gert,

J'aime beaucoup cette composition parce qu'elle raconte une histoire en même temps qu'une manière de vivre dans ces régions. La lumière est belle et les ombres fortes.

Hello Gert,
An excellent photo of these four patient people waiting for the bus in the bright sunlight. It's a great detail that they are all sitting or standing in different positions at some distance from one another. The colourful walls make a fine backdrop.

Hi Gert
De beaux portraits aux expressions et positions différentes, la lumière est belle et les couleurs attirantes, belles versions aussi en WS , magnifique
Belle soirée

Hello Gert, very good picture of this interesting scene of everyday life with people waiting, very well captured in this interesting image, with good sharpness, light, color and quality. A great job perfectly done, my congratulations, my friend. Thanks for sharing this interesting work.

Good night and happy weekend.
All the best from the south of Spain.

Hello Gert
A nice opportunity to compare your choices from 2006 and now. Both are well considered and attractive. In 2006 you focussed more on the individual. Now more at the story of a small group. I like today’s main picture the most for they have a good story and an excellent composition.
Excellent work. Have a good weekend, groet Rob

Ciao Gert
in effetti in tutte le foto ci sono persone stanche e annoiate, ma forse è solo un caso.
Le foto sono tutte belle, mi piacciono le composizione e le inquadrature.
Buon we

Hi Gert
how's the rich White European doing today? haha
but yes, i know what you mean :)

looking at all 3 shots, I prefer the WS#1 the most, and you can probably guess why. Thats the photo with the most architecture in the bg to examine, yet still has plenty of human interest as well, it has alot going on.

This main one is good because of the mood and frustrations of the people in it, so i can see the benefit here as well.
They don't seem to care you're photographing them, maybe they have other things to worry about.

a fine collection of shots, interesting looking at what they've chosen to wear on their heads. cheers

The people too seems cuban. 3 very nice memories from the islands recently visited by Jean, maybe he inspired you to take a look in your hard disk. Have a nice weekend and thanks,Luciano

Hello Gert,
Interesting scene from the street in Cape Verde .
I like the colors here.
Fine presentation from your archive..

Hi Gert
A splendid set of photos of people whose lives pass on waiting and watching the world go by...
This one is my favourite of the three, it could well have been staged as the poses are so perfect for the theme. I also like the large cubic shapes of the walls and door. The two baskets are a nice addition too.
Best wishes

Hello Gert,

Indeed, I have the same trouble, but the programs in photo shop are better and better.
When you had a good picture but with to law pixels as early, then can now more and more make better
Sharpness and clarity are perfectly.
Pleasant perspective and depth picture.
An excellent composition and lovely presentation.
Very well done, TFS.

Have a nice weekend,

Hello dear Gert,
Another nice "oldie" in your gallery.
Again perfect pov and compo; very nice and well balanced ligth management.
Many usefull notes as well.
TFS and have a nice weekend,

Hello dear Gert and have a nice time
and a happy Sunday
my personal opinion is that the quality
of this photo is the best with impressive
colors and people waiting!!!!
the most important details here is that
there is a movement adding a different
sense to this scenery it is a typical and traditional
photo showing those ladies wearing scarves
on their heads

Hello Gert,

Cape Verde and the Canary Islands seem to be popular uploads at the moment. I haven't been to either. A superb daily life shot of the tired and frustrated commuters. I sometimes used taxis in Romania to get around if there were no bus connections. But wouldn't dream of doing that in either Sweden or Australia where they want an arm, a leg, & your first born child as payment! Good sharpness with punchy light contrasts and vivid colors. Tfs!

Dear Gert,

Or should I address you as your Royal Highness? :) Joking apart: I'm familiar with the situation, when photos look better or it is just the photographer, who evaluates them better as time passes.

Best Wishes,

Hi Gert,

You have captured well the sad expression of the people. The point of view is showing the details of the facade of the house. There is a good contrast between the colors of the picture. Have a nice day.

There was a scorching sun, for sure, Gert, as one lady covered her chick from the rays and heat.
A daily life scene, as people waiting, some for work maybe for a ride home. The colors are appealing, as said.
Have a nice sunday,

*** What you saw was after light and shadows adjustment. Thanks.

Hello Gert,
Three colourful and very attractive daily life-pictures from that small town in Cabo Verde.
The second one in the WS (altered image # 1) is the most beautiful to me, even while the ladies look away.
On that picture the biggest group of people is gathered while on the background we get a nice view of the charming architecture.
Clearly with Portuguese influences.
Being a former Portuguese colony but situated near the coast of West Africa close to Senegal, I wonder what religion these residents have ...
Best regards, Paul

Hello Gert,
nice scene from Cape Verde, wit the natives to are waiting for the passing by bus? The colour painting of the walls, the excellent light management and the more important, the body language make the image so beautiful and unique.

Hello Gert, I will be not inspired by this photo because I haven't been to Cape Verde. After the series of Jean I see this is attractive destination. Beautiful landscape and also African people. I must go there somewhen :). The pictures you posted earlier are also nice even if they have few smileys, But this one is fantastic, I like the strong colours and beautiful light. And also interesting scene on the bus stop. It happens to me also to wait a long time for the bus..
Have a nice week

Hello, Gert!

It's really a very nice daily life scene you show us here after almost 12 years of this journey of yours! The quality is very good, with beautiful and well saturated colors and excellent sharpness! They seem to be tired of waiting for something... Very nice composition! Well done!

Hello Gert,
Yes, the colors and textures are lovely in the main entry. WS #1 is not lagging behind in colors, either. So what was your first digital camera? Did (do) you shoot RAW or JPEG?

Hallo Gert I read below about the rekindeled nostalgia of your first digital camera and I share with you the reminiscent excitement of the good old days of those expensive three megapixels cameras whose outputs could be enlarged "up to 27x36 cm", according to the photo magazines. Of course, this view of bored waiting passengers displaying a casual posture is quite significent of silent weariness expressed with allover pleasing soft contrast, as the human eye is used to.
Magnificent souvenir of by-then. Hjartliga halsningar

Hello Gert,
The boredom and frustration is clearly evident in this shot. I've seen the same looks at bus stops here in NYC, but on people who only had to wait a few extra minutes for their bus to arrive. :-) I like the bright wall and stone street.
